The USA Basketball Women’s national team captured their sixth straight gold medal defeating Spain 101-72 in what will likely be the end of an era for the UCONN trio (Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Coach Geno Auriemma). This also caps off a great Olympic career for tri-captain Tamika Catchings who is set to retire at the conclusion of this WNBA season.
Taurasi and Lindsay Whalen led the way for the Americans with 17 points apiece. Team USA was off to a slow start leading by only four points after the first quarter but by halftime their lead ballooned to 17 points and they didn’t look back. Their 32 point third quarter allowed them to cruise en route to the gold.
The US women shot 58 percent for the game and 60 percent from three while holding Spain to just 39 percent and 36 percent from beyond the arc. All tournament USAWB passing has been on display, tonight was no different as the team dished out 29 assist.
Alba Torrens led the way for Spain in the losing effort with 18 points.
The women’s Olympic win streak reaches 49 in a row.
