This year's women's tournament was one of the more exciting ones. It packed lots and lots of history featuring three first timers in the final four: University of Washington, Oregon State University, and runner-up Syracuse University. The UCONN Huskies and coach Geno Auriemma were chasing history while remaining perfect.
Last night, Auriemma surpassed John Wooden with most National Championship wins as an NCAA head coach when his Huskies defeated Syracuse 82-51.
UCONN led from wire to wire in the victory. Credit to Syracuse playing in their first ever National Championship, they showed heart and toughness. They went on a 16-0 run in the third quarter forcing Auriemma to call a timeout to get his Huskies back on track. But this senior led team was just too much for Syracuse, they withstood the run and continued dominating as they had all season.
The senior trio of Breanna Stewart, Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson end their careers with a remarkable 151-5 record. They led a historical run which put UCONN in history books forever as they become the first team men or women to win four straight National Championships. Stewart captured another Most Outstanding Player award, making her the first player to win that honor four times.
It was a feeling that the players and coach said was "indescribable."
