UCONN 66 SC 54 F
Huskies: Breanna Stewart 25pts, 10 rebounds, 5 blks
Morgan Tuck 16pts
Gamecocks: A'Ja Wilson 13pts, 6 rebounds
Sarah Imovbioh 13pts, 8 rebounds
Top-ranked Huskies earned their 60th consecutive win after cruising past South Carolina at Colonial Life Arena this evening. As I stated in my preview for the game, two of my keys for a UCONN victory were the Huskies controlling the glass and pushing the tempo. They did both limiting the Gamecocks to four offensive rebounds and zero fast break points.
The Huskies came out firing with Breanna Stewart opening the game with the first points for either team. The Gamecocks came up empty on several possessions allowing UCONN to race to a 35-25 halftime lead. UCONN forced the home squad into 11 first half turnovers. Stewart led the way with 13 points, while Moriah Jefferson added 10 first half points. A'Ja Wilson headed to the locker room with a leg injury with 4:20 left in the second quarter but paced the Gamecocks with nine points at the half. Wilson would return in the third.
UCONN continued firing in the second half with their lead ballooning to 20 points. Sarah Imovbioh came off the bench with great energy helping the Gamecocks get as close as 16 points. UCONN finished the game shooting 42 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the arc. As a team they had 14 assist and six blocks. The Huskies held South Carolina to 37 percent shooting, whose offense struggled and only produced seven assist.
Wilson and Imovbioh had 13 apiece leading the way for the gamecocks who suffered their first loss of the season. Tiffany Mitchell chipped in 12. Breanna Stewart led UCONN with an all around solid effort finishing with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Morgan Tuck added 16 and Jefferson contributed 12 points while dishing out six assist.
South Carolina failed on the keys I previously pointed out in the loss. They were often in lulls, they did not slow UCONN transition and they did not get Alaina Coates going in the paint. For Dawn Staley & co. back to the drawing board, they should see UCONN again come tournament time.
