#1 Kansas played host to #2 Oklahoma in a highly anticipated match-up this evening. The two teams certainly lived up to the hype and then some in this triple overtime thriller. The game featured 12 lead changes and 13 ties.
Kansas saw their largest lead of the first half ,11, evaporate as Buddy Hield led Oklahoma on an 18-3 run to put his sooners up 44-40 at the half. Hield finished the half with 22, Perry Ellis paced the Jayhakws with 11.
Oklahoma headed into the second half with all the momentum, but Kansas rallied to cut their lead to three. Oklahoma would respond, but a layup at the 5:40 mark by Wayne Selden Jr. tied the game at 68. Kansas got their first lead since the first half on a basket at the 3:23 mark that put them ahead 73-72. The teams continued trading baskets the rest of the way. On their final possesion with the score tied and a chance to win, Kansas missed their attempt and was called for an over the back foul with 2.1 seconds remaining. Khadeem Lattin went to the line for the Sooners to shoot a one and one, he missed; sending the game into overtime.
Overtime featured both teams trading baskets. Both teams failed to score on their final possesions of overtime forcing a double overtime. Neither team led by more than three in the extra period. Kansas got the last possesion in overtime and double overtime and failed to convert a basket in both forcing a third overtime. The Jayhakws took control down the stretch of the third overtime. Thanks to a timely defensive stop by Frank Mason III forcing a turnover with 20 seconds remaining, Devonte' Graham raced down the court for a fastbreak layup and was fouled on the play. Jordan Woodard of Oklahoma fouled out on that play. Graham' free throws put the jayhawks up one. Out of the timeout, Oklahoma turned the ball over on the inbounds. The possesion ended in a foul sending Mason to the line to seal the deal, putting the Jayhawks up three with 8.6 seconds remaining. On the final possesion, Hield missed his three point attempt allowing Kansas to escape with a 109-106 victory at home. Oklahoma suffered their first loss of the season.
