Mississippi State got off to a quick 5-0 start at Rupp Arena before the home team used a 12-0 run to take control. Despite shooting 59 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three, Kentucky forced Mississippi State into 12 turnovers. Mississippi State also allowed Kentucky 7 offensive rebounds, and found themselves trailing the Wildcats 39-31 at the half. Craig Sword scored 10 for Mississippi State, while Jamal Murray paced the Wildcats with 11.

Kentucky blew the game open in the second half and led by as many as 20 points. But, a gritty Mississippi state team rallied to cut it to three within the final minutes. Kentucky' defense helped them edge out the visitors. Kentucky had four blocks as a team compared to none by Mississippi State. The Wildcats also enjoyed the advantage on the boards winning that 33-20. Murray's 22 points and Tyler Ulis' 21 led the Wildcats to the 80-74 victory. Mississippi State was paced by Sword' 20 points, Malik Newman chipped in 14.
